Mechanisms of Itch [login at prompt]

Itch is the most common symptom in dermatology yet there are few specific treatments. The impact of itch on quality of life matches that of pain. We pair fundamental techniques to gain mechanistic insights with clinical research to identify genetic variants that contribute to itch. We use advanced in vivo imaging and deep sequencing to examine the neuroanatomy and biology of sensory fibers. We use CRISPR to make humanized mice in order to model itch. We welcome the opportunity to generate mice in which skin is genetically labeled, akin to Brainbow mice, to examine interactions between neurons and other skin cells. We are particularly interested in deciphering the role of mas-related G-protein coupled receptors in basic models and in humans. Clinical studies can also be undertaken. These include the itch associated with burns and the use of fractionated laser or cold to treat itch. Writing of in-depth of an in-depth review is welcome.
