Overview
My career has focused on understanding the connection between exposure to intermittent or continuous hypoxia and sustained activation of the sympathetic nervous system which results in arterial hypertension. This interest has, over time, led us to patient studies of sleep apnea, investigations of normal volunteers exposed to a novel model of cyclic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), and animal studies using a rodent model of CIH. In recent years we have concentrated on understanding the mechanisms of peripheral chemoreflex plasticity and the contribution of the carotid chemoreceptor to sympathoexcitation. In particular, our laboratory now focuses on the contribution of glutamatergic transmission in the carotid body between glomus cells and between glomus cells and neurons to sustained sympathoexcitation after exposure to intermittent hypoxia. This interest reflects growing recognition that peripheral chemoreceptor plasticity is essential for a variety of forms of neurogenic hypertension.
