Mentoring Available: 01/15/13, Expires: 06/01/13 The Program in Placebo Studies and the Therapeutic Encounter is a network of Harvard scientists and clinicians hosted at the BIDMC. Our goal is to understand the psychosocial, neurological and genetic factors involved in the placebo response. We take a multi-disciplinary approach in our research designs and analytic methods drawing from basic, clinical, and social sciences as well as the humanities.
We are currently seeking students interested in our biomarkers project which involves looking across clinical conditions to find common traits that predict who will or will not be a placebo responder. We will then test our findings in a broad cross-section of trials from cancer, to cardiovascular disease, irritable bowel syndrome and asthma. This project is located at BIDMC.
We anticipate additional opportunities in the future.

We take a multi-disciplinary approach in our research designs and analytic methods drawing from basic, clinical, and social sciences as well as the humanities. We are looking for a student that would be interested in the neuroscience of placebo and intellectual disability. We are a small team of placebo scientists, including one researcher with expertise in intellectual
disabilities, that would need help with a systematic literature review of placebo controlled trials in individuals with intellectual disabilities. The student will learn how to perform meta-analyses of medical data. Basic knowledge about statistics is required. Meetings will be held at Mass General Hospital in Boston.
