 overview
Jeremiah (Jay) Schuur, MD, MHS, is a practicing emergency physician with a research focus on health care quality and policy. He is the Chief of the Division of Health Policy Translation and the Vice Chair of Patient Safety and Quality for the Department of Emergency Medicine of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Emergency) at Harvard Medical School. He completed an emergency medicine residency at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He then spent 2 years as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Yale University where he worked on ED quality improvement, and developing and assessing performance measures. Dr. Schuur chairs the Quality and Performance Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is an appointed a member of the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC), which provides CMS with independent guidance and expert advice regarding the effectiveness and appropriateness of medical items and services that are covered or that may be eligible for coverage under Medicare. Dr. Schuur represents Emergency Medicine on the American Medical Association's Physician Council for Performance Improvement (PCPI), as ACEP's primary representative. Dr. Schuur’s current research focuses on developing, implementing and evaluating measures of quality of care and patient safety in emergency medicine. He has led development of multiple performance measures that have been endorsed by the National Quality Forum.

Dr. Schuur's current research focuses on developing, implementing and evaluating measures of quality of care and patient safety in emergency medicine. Dr. Schuur has received grant funding to study specialty consultation in the ED and quality of care for older adults in the ED. He is currently directing several funded research projects including 1) to evaluate observation care in Massachusetts EDs; 2) to develop antibiograms at skilled nursing facilities and assess their effectiveness on patients transferred to the ED; 3) to identify and disseminate best practices to prevent healthcare associated infections in EDs.

Dr. Schuur has successfully mentored medical students and residents on research projects leading to multiple publications and resident grants. Please contact him if you are interested in working on research or quality improvement projects in his group.
