Mentoring Available: 02/01/12, Expires: 06/30/15 Over a 40 year period, the Barbados Nutrition Study has systematically followed individuals and their offspring in Barbados from birth through adulthood and more recently into the next generation. One group of participants suffered from protein-energy malnutrition during the first year of life and the other group includes participants from the same neighborhoods and classrooms who do not have histories of malnutrition. This unique longitudinal study has extensively documented the developmental course of these individuals over the lifespan. The previously malnourished group displayed significant behavioral deficits that persisted into adulthood even after controlling for other environmental and ecological factors. A new NIH-funded study will evaluate phenotypic and epigenetic changes in the healthy G2 offspring of the Barbados Nutrition Study cohort, relating these to changes arising from early childhood malnutrition in the G1 parent population. This is an interdisciplinary program involving epidemiology, nutrition, neuroscience, neuropsychology, psychiatry, cardiology and epigenetics. This laboratory also has a program of translational research in animal models examining the effects of malnutrition in early life on the brain and behavioral developments.
Specific student projects will be determined in collaboration with Dr. Galler, but will aid in continuing to explore the relationship between early childhood nutrition and mental health, behavioral and health outcomes over the lifespan. Work may include literature reviews, data analysis using SAS and preparation of grants and manuscripts.
