The structures of viruses and viral proteins allow us to probe the mechanisms by which viruses penetrate cells to initiate infection. The detailed molecular pictures that result also provide opportunities for considering new ways to design vaccine immunogens. Potential projects include protein expression and characterization, up to and including x-ray crystallographic analysis of relevant structures, depending on previous experience and duration of time commitment.
