Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are non-hematopoietic stromal stem cells that are known to – (i) have capacity to differentiate into the cells of all three germ layers, including epithelial cells; (ii) secrete trophic factors, which promote survival of tissue resident cells; (iii) have inherent tendency to home to the injured sites; and (iv) potently modulate effector functions of immune cells, including antigen-presenting cells and T cell subsets. Our laboratory is investigating both the regenerative and immunomodulatory potential of MSC for the treatment of the ocular surface disorders. More specifically, the goal of this project is to delineate the mechanism and therapeutic contribution of MSC in corneal diseases by systematically exploring a variety of well-characterized mouse model systems of corneal injury and inflammation.
