I am working to develop safer conception strategies for HIV-discordant (one partner has HIV, the other does not) heterosexual couples in Durban, South Africa and Mbarara, Uganda. Available strategies include delay of conception attempts until the infected partner is on antiretroviral treatment, pre-exposure prophylaxis for the uninfected partner, sex without condoms limited to peak fertility, STI treatment, and circumcision for female-positive couples. Figuring how to implement this in settings with male-dominated sexual practices, HIV stigma, and overburdened health systems is the focus of my behavioral science research.
Student research could be tailored to the interests and skills of the student including qualitative research around healthcare worker provision of reproductive counseling services, development of healthcare worker eduation modules to improve safer conception counseling; analysis of quantitative data on use of contraception, fertility plans, partner dynamics among serodiscordant couples in care; development of instruments for use in an intervention with future data analysis; etc.
There are many branch points in this research and many possible directions. The student will have the option of carrying out research abroad if interested.
