Narrative
The overarching goal of my research is to improve quality of care and increase patient safety through innovative work in clinical systems and related areas of medical informatics. To this end, my research has two principal focuses: clinical decision support and mining large warehouses of clinical data.
My clinical decision support research primarily focuses on architectures for sharing decision support content across sites. I have developed an architecture, called SANDS, for syndicating decision support content across networks. Early results are positive, and in my current work, I am extending the architecture to work at more sites, and bringing it into real-world use.
In addition to my work on architectures for decision support, I conduct a variety of other projects. Many of these are listed elsewhere in this CV, but I will highlight a few here:
Data mining for decision support: I have been applying data mining techniques to large clinical datasets in order to automatically develop decision support content, such as order sets and corollary orders. I am the PI of a funded study applying these techniques to the domain of clinical problem lists.
Personal Health Records: I have a special interest in the privacy aspects of personal health records, particularly technical issues such as encryption and security.
Quality-CPOE link: I am leading a project to quantitatively explore the link between CPOE and quality of care. We are collaborating with HIMSS Analytics, the Leapfrog Group and HealthGrades on this work.
Applied guideline sharing: I am the Partners site lead for an AHRQ-funded project to share guidelines and clinical decision support content across six sites in the United States.
